How to Separate and Dispose of Recyclable Materials and Waste
Burnable waste : twice a week
Wet kitchen waste, paper trash, disposable paper diapers, plant trash, old clothes, non-recyclable plastic items (such as audio tape, video tape, CD and DVD with their boxes, polyethylene tanks and buckets etc), leather-made items (such as handbag, shoes), gum-made items (such as rubber boots, hosepipe), etc.
Unburnable waste : once a week
Glassware, metal items, fluorescent bulbs, ceramic ware, plastics and vinyl not suitable for incineration, spray cans, small size electrical appliances, etc.
How to dispose of burnable and unburnable waste
- Respecting set day and time for collection, place your trash solely at the place designated for disposal.
- Take out any water from the waste before disposing of it.
- Put old fluorescent tubes into the boxes that come with new tubes,and write “DANGER” on the outside before disposal.
- Wrap all sharp (or potentially sharp) waste, such as glassware and needles, in cardboard or similar, and write “DANGER” on the outside before disposal.
- Be sure to empty all aerosol spray cans before disposal, but take care not to puncture them.
- Any item bigger than 30 cm must be disposed as a bulky trash item.
- Put the waste into a trash bin with a lid, or a translucent waste bag authorized for trash collection in the 23 Tokyo wards, before disposal, (unburnable waste can also be disposed in a transparent or semi-transparent bag, including shopping bags).
Unburnable waste from business establishments and stores are subject to charged collection, (for business establishments and stores with daily disposal volumes of up to 50 kg). Purchase the Charged Waste Disposal Coupons provided by Chiyoda City corresponding to the volume of waste at a convenience store or similar and stick them onto the waste or the bags before disposal.
Bulky Trash (collection must be requested, and is charged)
Trash such as used furniture (size shall exceed W 30 x D 30 cm, but no longer than 180 cm), are considered bulky trash. Please take an appointment for collection by calling the Bulky Trash Reception Center (tel : 5296-7000, http://sodai.tokyokanko.or.jp). Office trash is not collected by the ward’s services.
Recyclable Materials (Paper, bottles, cans, polystyrene trays) : once a week
Take out the recyclable materials before 8h00 on the recyclable’s collection day, and place it at the place designated for disposal.
- Used paper : Newspapers, magazines, corrugated fiberboard, drink cartons (500 ml or larger; to be rinsed out with water and dried). Separate by type, bundle and tie with a string, then deposit at the collection point.
Used paper from business establishments and stores are subject to charged collection. For a 10 cm thick (roughly 2 carton boxes) pack, please purchase a 10 litres Wasted Disposal Coupons provided by Chiyoda City at a convenience store or similar and stick them onto the trash before disposal.
- Bottles and cans : Steel, aluminum cans, and glass bottles for drinks and foodstuffs. Rinse inside, and place in the blue plastic or yellow container at the collection point.
- Trays : Polystyrene trays for foods and foodstuffs. Rinse with water,and place in the mesh bag provided at the collection point.
- “PET” bottles : plastic bottles for beverages, alcoholic drinks, soy sauce, mirin (sweet rice liqueur for cooking), etc. Remove the cap and label (to be disposed on the plastic mark day), rinse the inside, then crush the bottle before placing it in the mesh bag provided at the collection point. PET bottles are also collected in convenient stores and participating stores.
Recyclable materials from business establishments and stores are subject to charged collection, (for business establishments and stores with daily disposal volumes of up to 50 kg). Plastic branded packaging : once a week
Branded items (containers and packaging) are to be be taken out before 8h00 on the collection day (plastic mark day), and placed at the place designated for trash disposal.
- Polystyrene trays for foods and foodstuffs (including plastic mark branded ones) are collected on recyclable materials day of collection..
- Clean or wash the plastic items, and place it in transparent or semi-transparent bags..
- If you cannot clean the plastic item, place it with the burnable trash.

Home Electric Appliances
It is mandatory to recycle used Braun (cathode ray) tube type TV sets, air-conditioners, washing machines, refrigerators, freezers, etc. Since the manufacturers are in charge of this collection, these items are not collected by the ward’s services.
- Ask for collection by the store or for an exchange when you buy a new electrical appliance.
In case of moving, or when the store cannot collect your old appliance, after confirmation from the original manufacturer, request collection by contacting the Home Electric Appliances Reception Center (tel : 5296-7200, Monday-Saturday, 8h-17h).
Personal computers
The manufacturers are in charge of this collection, therefore these items are not collected by the ward’s services.
- Contact the manufacturer of your computer, for example through its customer service in Japan.
- When the manufacturer is unknown or is not present in Japan, ask the “PC 3R Promotion Center” for instructions. Tel : 5282-7685, http://pc3r.jp/uketsuke.html
- The price of all computers sold in Japan after September 10, 2003, includes a recycling tax. Therefore no charge for collection is needed for these computers.
- Collection for computers used in offices is also in manufacturers’ charge. Contact your computer’s manufacturer for collection.
