For Fire, Ambulance and Rescue: Dial 119 For the Fire Department

When a Fire Breaks Out in Your Residence

If a fire starts in your home, first alert your neighbors and call the fire department (dial only 119). Like the 110 number for the police, you can also call 119 from public pay phones. Since both fire engines and ambulances are stationed at the fire department:
(1) The officer will ask you whether you are calling about a fire or ambulance, so please specify which.
There is a fire. = Kaji desu.
I/we need an ambulance. = Kyukyu desu.
Then give the officer the following information:
(2) The location where assistance is needed, and
(3) Your name.
After calling 119, you can resume notifying your neighbors and, as long as you feel safe, start to extinguish the fire with a fire extinguisher. When oil catches fire, do not try to put it out with water, but use a fire extinguisher or cover the fire with wet towels. When escaping, cover your nose and mouth with a wet towel and stay low

How to Use a Fire Extinguisher

(1) Remove the safety pin.
(2) Unhook the hose and aim it at the fire.
(3) Squeeze the lever tightly to spray.

Illusutration: Basic Prevention

House fires are terrible disasters and the house usually burns to the ground. In Japan, these fires are most likely to occur in the winter because of the dry air and frequent use of fire. Please pay special attention to the following in order to prevent house fires:
(1) Before going to bed or going out, check all sources of fire such as cigarettes, ashtrays, electric and gas appliances.
(2) Do not leave the kitchen, particularly when cooking with oil.
(3) Do not place anything that catchs fire easily close to room heaters.
(4) In order to prevent arson, do not leave anything that catchs fire easily around your residence.

When to Call an Ambulance

If there is a sudden injury or sickness, call 119, the same number as for the fire department. You can say “Please send an ambulance = Kyukyusha wo onegai shimasu.” Before the ambulance arrives, if possible, provide first aid treatment and get the health insurance certificate and some cash. When you hear the approaching siren, go outside to direct the ambulance.
