If You Have Been Burglarized

Illusutration: For Crime, Theft and Traffic Accidents: Dial 110 For the Police

If your home has been burglarized, contact the police right away. You can either go to the nearest police box or station, or call 110 anytime from anywhere in Japan. To call from a pay phone, press the emergency button located on the phone, then push 1-1-0. People tend to become panicked during an emergency, but please try to remain as calm as possible. It’s a good idea to practice some key phrases in Japanese in a slow and clear voice. When you call the police, give them

the necessary information in the following order:

(1) Description:
Burglarized = Dorobo desu.
Accident = Jiko desu.
(2) Location:
The location is xxx. = xxx desu.
The location is in front of the xxx Apartment. = xxx apato no mae desu.
(3) Your Name:
This is xxx speaking. = xxx desu.
If your bankbooks, cash or credit cards have been stolen, remember to contact the banks and appropriate companies.

When You Are Involved in a Traffic Accident

When you are involved in a traffic accident, first call 110. If there is an injured person, remember to ask for an ambulance at the same time.
Please pay special attention to the following when there is a traffic accident:
(1) Write down the name, address, telephone number and driver’s license number of the other party, the license plate number of the other vehicle, the name of his/her insurance company, policy number and type of insurance.
(2) When there is a witness, please ask, if possible, for his/her statement and how you can contact him/her in the future.
(3) If you are hurt (particularly in the head and/or neck) and even when there is no visible injury, please go to the hospital for a professional examination.

When You or Your Belongings Get Lost - Go to the Police Box

Japan has a police system that is unique - police boxes with policemen on duty are scattered throughout the community. Designed to provide convenient assistance, they handle a wide range of matters, including crime, traffic accidents, lost items, missing persons, runaways and assistance in giving directions.
